Baron Samedi ‘Hip-Hop’ first leak from new album

London-based MC and producer Baron Samedi (pronounced Bah-ron Sah-meh-dee) first picked up a pen and a sampler over ten years ago and since then has been grinding away crafting his art and slowly building a rep through the release of several well-received street albums and mix-tapes, both as a solo artist and as one half of Undercurrent with fellow MC Lixx, beginning with the self-produced 2002 Undercurrent concept album Sons Of Celluloid, and quickly followed in 2003 by debut solo album Spit Happens: The Musical, which is still rated as one of the most original and best underground UK hip hop releases ever by many fans.

In 2004 Baron began an association with Leicester-based label Main Rock Records, which led to the release of the Theme Music 12”, the critically-acclaimed Undercurrent EP Pirate Radio, and his sophomore solo album Ripping Yarns within a 2 year period, resulting in coverage in Hip Hop Connection, Undercover, DJ Mag, and Blues And Soul, as well as airplay on Steve Lamacq’s Radio 1 show. Two more street mixtapes followed, 2006′s Animal Rites and the 2008 Undercurrent mixtape Crisis Talks, whilst Baron remained holed up in the lab perfecting his style. Most recently, he has fully produced fellow London MC Grit Grammar’s debut album, Life Music, and the first single off it, Hard Times, featuring Genesis Elijah, was Radio 1xtra’s Introducing track of the week, as well as featuring on Radio 6′s Introducing show, whilst the follow-up single, Life Is, featuring Kyza and Dani Appadoo, has received daytime support on 1xtra from both Viz and Max.

Now, 2011 sees the long-awaited release of Baron Samedi’s new solo album, Wanderland. Entirely self-produced, and not reliant on a glut of guest appearances for impact, Wanderland is a modern tour-de-force of thoughtful, original hip hop standing alone in a sea of formulaic music. From the opening prog-rock stylings of Prelude, through the future-funk stutter of Wanderland and Crooked House, past the soulful melodies of Better Days and Airport Lounges, all the way to the laconic ode to London which is The Valley, Wanderland is an album which sounds unlike any of its peers, either musically or lyrically, and shines through because of it. Baron Samedi – the future begins here.

“Not really sounding like anyone else out there and all the more absorbingly unique because of it”

Huddersfield based female producer Miss Tofelees has been making a name for herself over the last few years working with some of the UK’s best underground MC’s such as Dabbla from London Zoo, Big Cakes and Manny Moscow as well as her production has featured on mixtapes from UK Runnings, Certified Banger & DJ Ames. Miss Tofelees is definitely a producer to be looking out for in 2011 with a barrage of releases planned for the UK Hip-Hop scene. Welsh rapper Big Si is another talent from the homegrown rap scene. His on-point delivery, clever wordplay and massive sense of realism in his bars make him one of Great Britain’s most slept on MC’s. After receiving superb positive reviews from some of the scene’s biggest websites such as UKHHF, 100 Per Cent UK, Raw Roots, Rago Magazine and Bring Da Ruckus, Big Si is a rapper with integrity and style.

With a barrage of UK acts turning from Grime and Hip-Hop to Pop and Urban, it’s hard sometimes to think what is happening to our beloved UK Hip-Hop scene. Every once in a while comes a release that restores your faith in quality music and that is the third and final chapter to ‘Life & Music’, the infamous EP series from rapper Big Si and producer Miss Tofelees. The first two volumes of ‘Life & Music’ were well received from media, DJ’s and internet tastemakers, and ‘Volume Three’ will be no different. Five well produced solid Hip-Hop cuts infusing funk, soul, jazz and all things organic are mixed up into a creative melting pot of positive lyrics and catchy hooks. This is real Hip-Hop at its best and Miss Tofeless & Big Si release ‘Life & Music Volume 3’ drops 3rd January 2011 with each song only costing 40 pence each or you can grab the whole EP for just £1.50.

Geolani Grandz Feat French Montana ‘Smellin Like Money’ (Review)

Geolani Grandz Feat French Montana ‘Smellin Like Money’ (Review)

Geolani Grandz has been doing his damn thang since around 2004 and is a man who is has been making moves ever since. What I like about Grandz is he is what I would call ‘Hip-Hop’. He is gangsta with it but not really a gangsta rapper, and he uses clever wordplay that references things is Hip-Hop but without being boring Boom Bap Rucksack Rap. Here he teams up French Montana, the Bronx MC famous for collaborating with Max B and starting the massive Cocaine City DVD and now signed to Akon’s Konvict Music label. ‘Smellin Like Money’ is destined to be a underground smash with the track already featuring on numerous mixtapes on both sides of the Atlantic. Make sure you cop this. It’s out now on Geolani’s massive Team AFF imprint.
