Q-Unique Interview

Firstly thanks for taking time to do this exclusive interview for www.HipHop4Days.com. Let’s start at the beginning. How did you get into making music and when would you say your career started?
I was born into a musical family, my mom plays guitar and would write music and perform with a band all over NYC, my father was a trumpet player and his knowledge of music is incredible. So for me it started very early, I was entertaining house guests at the age of 5. The first genre of music tht I started with professionally was hip hop, and I started seriously recording demos and shopping in 1988.

From when you started to now, what you consider being your biggest tracks or releases?
The song I co wrote for C+C was # 1 on the Billboard charts, the 1st Arsonists album, and my 1st solo album.

How would you describe the music that you make?
Soul music, because it comes primarily from my soul.

Have you done many collaborations, if so who have you worked with and what was your most memorable experience?
Fieldy from Korn, Wuv from POD, Robert Trujillo from Metallica, Jim Root from Slipknot, Clint Lowery from Sevendust,  Ray Luzier from Korn, The Rock Steady Crew, the Arsonists, Ill Bill, La Coka Nostra, Raekwon from Wu Tang, Psycho Realm,

Hip-Hop is changing all the time. How do you feel about Hip-Hop in 2010, who are you feeling and how is the game treating you?

I don’t have any complaints, my fans are awesome, always have been. As far as hip hop artists that I like, Ill Bill, Slaine, Psycho Realm, DJ Muggs, DJ Premier, Nas, Diabolic, Nems, Black Milk, Jedi Mind Tricks,  MOP, Diamond District, theres a lot..

Tell me about the label you’re with, even if it’s your own label. Tell us who is involved and how many people behind the scenes are helping you?
Right now Im with Fat Beats Records, one of the greatest labels / distributors when it comes to independent hip hop, and DJ Eclipse is managing me right now, to me he is a general in the indy hip hop scene.

The music industry is changing from CD’s & Vinyl over to MP3, stores are getting closed and on-line shops are starting up. Do you think CD’s are dead or do you think it depends on the genre & artist?
I think it depends on the genre, for hip hop, CDs are almost dead because the support system is not as good as Metal / Rock, but eventually it wont matter for any genre.

So where are you from exactly and have you ever done any local gigs?
I’m from Brooklyn NY, I’ve done 100’s of performances in NY.

Have you done any big gigs or played live with any big artists? If so tell us what is was like and what playing live means to you.
Yes, I’ve went on tour with Korn from 2006 up until now, opened up for them in Latvia, awesome show, I learned a lot from those guys. Live performances are the most important things to today’s artist because of such poor record sales, you have to be incredible live, so its very important to me.

Hip-Hop is sometime viewed as negative music and in the media often gets a raw deal. Do you think that Hip-Hop should be more positive and that artists have a responsibility to the youth?
I think the parents should be responsible for what their children listen to or watch, I think an artist should be an artist and should be free to express themselves.
